Not so long ago creators working with images, sound or interactive materials were forced to use commercial tools developped by software corporations. Recently, a whole generation of programs developed by the free software community are making possible a new way of approaching digital creation, by means of tools that not only are free, but that in many cases work better than their commercial counterparts.
These workshops offer a practical introduction to these new tools. Neither registration nor reservations are required; just show up with your laptop and join the workshop.

Processing is a programming language for interactive materials and algorithmic art expressly designed for digital artists. The goal of this workshop is to introduce visual creators to programming in an easy way, and to offer an alternative to more established commercial platforms such as Flash or Director, which, at the moment, are the only option for those creators who are interested in going digital but found themselves lacking in programming skills. Federico Joselevich is a member of the Barcelona-based collective Area3.

Blender is an application that contains several tools for generating 3D graphics. It allows artists to create renderized images, animations (movies) and videogames in 3D. Distributed initially as free proprietary software (freeware), it adopted the GPL in 2002. Nowadays it is totally free, works accross platforms (it can be installed on Linux, OS X and Windows) and represents an excellent alternative to other programs for 3D design such as Maya and 3D Studio Max. Blender was one of the principal tools in the production of “Spiderman 2”. Julian Oliver is at the head of the independent videogames studio SelectParks.

Pure Data Pure Data is a free program developed by the free software community that is used for digital artists and VJs to control devices with sensors and to manipulate images and sound in real time on the stage or other performance situations. This project descends from Max/MSP, a revolutionary program that allowed many visual and audio artists to go into digital creation for the first time. However, unlike Max/MSP, Pure Data is a completely free program, and its performance is superior to that of Max/MSP. Tatiana de la O colaborates with Riereta, Indimedia Estrecho and Fadaitat.
