COPYFIGHT brings together many of the main actors in the free culture movement. Lawyers, activists, artists and thinkers that express the need to rethink intellectual property and to provide new models for authorship.

The public square is the principal space for debate in COPYFIGHT. Discussions cover three different areas: written culture, musical culture, and digital culture.

Every day COPYFIGHT closes its program of talks with the presentation of representative projects in the field of free culture. These are initiatives going beyond the limits of the current model for intellectual property as they claim for its reform.

The open source software movement and the free distribution of cultural materials are making inroads into the world of institutions and businesses. Representatives of public administrations, universities and the media talk about how these organizations can benefit from alternative models for intellectual property.

21:00h SPECIAL PRESENTATIONS

Illegal-art is an organization devoted to collecting works of art of all kinds that challenge the current conventions of intellectual property law, or that have been involved in litigation for infringing on someone’s copyright. Launched by the magazine Stay Free!, a publication that critically anaylises mass culture commercialization, so far they have organized several exhibitions and published CDs and DVDs collecting musical and audiovisual creations. Their work proves that in the remix and “copy&paste” age, the right to criticism, parody and freedom of speech is easily repressed through the demands of culture megacorporations using the current restrictive regime to their advantage.

The novelist Cory Doctorow is one of the bloggers of Boing Boing, the most-widely read blog on the Internet, and the European delegate of the EFF, the first international organization to defend the rights of Internet users. As an activists he is one of main critics of the anticopy and content control technologies promoted by the entertainment industry. As a writer, he has been a pioneer in the free distribution of the complete text of his novels on the Web as they simultaneously hit bookstores. Doctorow firmly believes that, far from hurting the interests of artists, digital distribution of culture is a tool that benefits both the creators and the public.

Editor of the Real Academia dictionary in CD-ROM and founder of the Cervantes Virtual Center, linguist and digital editor José Antonio Millán is the Spanish leading expert in the relationships between language and the new technologies.

Hernan Casciari has become one of the first writers to approach blogging with a literary aim. Casciari publishes novels at the same time he maintains, with great success, several blogs of fiction such as "diario de una mujer gorda" or "Juan Alonso Dámaso, vidente".

Not only is he one of the organizers of Jornadas Copyleft, but Amador Fernández Savater has been one of the first publishers to engage in the publication of books under licenses that allow everybody to copy and freely distribute them.

Javier Maestre is one of the most experienced Spanish lawyers in the field of cyberlaw. He has adapted the Creative Commons licenses to the Spanish legislation.
